Dikembe Mutombo was born on June 25, 1966, in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

His father, Samuel, was a school principal, and his mother, Biamba Marie, raised ten children (eight boys and two girls), of whom Dikembe was the seventh. The family was middle-class, enabling him to live in a modest home, attend the school where his father worked, and join his family in attending Protestant church services every Sunday.
