    Evel Knievel was born as Robert Craig Knievel Jr.

    on October 17, 1938, in Butte, Montana, a copper-mining town that, at the time, resembled a 19th century boom town. For most young men the future was limited to working in the mines, working in town, or working on one of the surrounding ranches.
